The 21c Team were back in St. Albans, to run inspirational Open Data Youth Challenges for 60 students between the ages of 8 and 18.
The team along with partners from Aecom, Microsoft and Silicon Abbey designed the hacks using a ‘Dragons' Den’ format, to enable any student - regardless of their technical background - to play with local open data and create innovative new business ideas and mobile application prototypes.
App ideas created included Lego Minds, an app that helps to build your own city from Lego bricks, St. Albans Travel, an app for people of all ages interested in exploring their local area, Saint History, an app that allows local people and tourists to visit historic sites and arrange funeral services, and Tunes 4 You, an app that aims to rival Ticketmaster, a mobile web site that helps people find and buy tickets for their favourite events.
If you'd like a Youth Hack Day in your area then contact Susan Ruston McAleer for more information.

Cities large and small, urban and rural, have won the top prize. Nomination is free. Being named a semi-finalist, finalist or top honoree brings international recognition and advances your community on the road to growth.
The Awards process is designed to identify Intelligent Communities based, not on their resources, but on their aims, strategies, focus, imagination and persistent and skilled execution. Communities with populations from two thousand up to ten million have competed successfully in the program. More at www.intelligentcommunity.org/awards.
